Haiti - Costa Rica wins [1-1, 5-3 on penalties], ending the Grenadiers' dream (video)

On Tuesday, August 4th, 2026, during the quarterfinals of the 2026 CONCACAF U-20 Champions League, our Grenadiers faced the Costa Rican national team, nicknamed "Les Ticos" at the Estadio Universitario BUAP in Puebla, Mexico. Despite a strong team performance, our Grenadiers were eliminated 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw and two 15-minute periods of extra time. The dream of qualifying for the 2027 World Cup has come to an end for our Grenadiers, who gave their all. Haiti exits the competition, but with pride and honor in a memorable match.

Cuban coach Raul Gonzalez Triana has opted for his traditional 4-4-2 formation and made two changes to the starting eleven compared to the previous match. Summary : Haiti opened the scoring in the 9th minute thanks to Clavens Exantus, surrounded by four defenders, whose shot from the edge of the box hit the crossbar before finding the back of the net [1-0].

Yerlan Sosa then equalized for Costa Rica's Ticos in the 55th minute from the penalty spot [1-1].

Neither team managed to take the lead during regulation time or the two 15-minute periods of extra time, leading to a penalty shootout.

The Ticos shone in the penalty shootout, converting all five of their attempts. Grenadier Marckidens Tanis's shot went over the crossbar, a decisive miss.

Thanks to this result, Costa Rica advances to the semifinals, where they will face either the United States or Guatemala. The team has also secured its place at the 2027 FIFA U-20 Men's World Cup, which will be held in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.
